Are you ever anxious about your upcoming orthopedic surgeon? If you are like me, the answer is absolutely YES! Recently I have discovered a new preperation that has now made my appointments with the orthopedic surgeon a breeze! In the past, I always had trouble remembering everything that I wanted to discuss with the surgeon in the midst of the appointment, which made me extremely anxious about the appointment. To fix this predicament I now write a letter before my appointment that I bring with me to the appointment.
I divide my letter into two sections, the first paragraphs details the progress that I have made since my last appointment. I discuss any problems or major gains that I made since my last visit, which helps set the table for the whole appointment. The second paragraph outlines the current concerns I have, such as what muscles I would like to botox. My doctor is able to read the letter right when he walks into the room, so he has an idea of what topics that I would like to discuss with him. This helps open up a two way conversation between my doctor and I so I can best plan for the future. While you are crafting your letter I would recommend that you look at any notes that your physical therapist has given you so you can incorporate as much crucial information in your letter as possible. This letter will also help the doctor view you as a mature person, who is able to engage in an educated conversation about potential surgeries, botox injections, etc. This will help you feel like you have more control over future procedures and other treatments.
